EMPA is a materials science and technology research institution. It specializes in applications, focused research and development, and provides high-level services in the field of sustainable materials science and technology.

The Applied Wood Materials Laboratory, directly participating in INNOBITE, applies research and development to promote the sustainable use of wood and wood based products and systems specifically in capital goods. A staff of around 30 researchers and technicians applies chemical, biological and physical methods to strengthen interactions between wood constituents and polymeric materials, focusing on reinforcement and functionalization of new (nano)composites, a higher durability of wood and the development of concepts to secure the reliability of timber structures.

In the past years, the lab successfully incorporated a number of biotechnological methods in traditional processes of the wood industry. The isolation, characterisation and modification of nanocellulose and its integration into products are strategic focus activities of the Cellulose Nanocomposites Group of EMPA’s Wood Lab.

Role in the project

Leader of WP2 From Wastes to valuable Products

Participation in:

  • The production and chemical modification of micro fibrillated cellulose (MFC) originating from urban or agricultural residues, as well as its compounding with different polymer matrices.
  • The preparation of films out of chemically modified MFC destined for reinforcement of L-TS composites.
  • The in-depth characterization of the composite properties
